Ladies and gentlemen, A fan has just shown me some photos of John Galliano's Spring 2010 line, and I must say I am quite impressed. The clothing is vintage inspired and spans a number of styles, but several of the outfits (particularly those of an equestrian theme) are very appropriate for steampunk fashion. ![]() You can find the rest of the images here: http://www.fashionologie.com/John-Galli Regards, etc., -G. Politics intrudes. Sorry, it's that time of the election cycle. Anyway Professor Jonathan Rutherford (more of him later, but he's relevant) says the following on Labourlist today;Whatever its current state, Labour is central to the progressive future and it needs to begin a process of democratic renewal both within its own organisation and by involving a broad range of progressive social and political movements in rebuilding a centre left coalition.Nick Clegg MP, in the Spectator tomorrow, says something quite different. ‘I like to think that Conservative voters who feel there is something flakey about the Cameron-Osborne leadership might feel there is a consistency and conviction in my leadership. I do understand that they feel it’s their turn, that they feel a sense of entitlement. But what has surprised me is this ideological vacuum at the heart of the Conservatives.’For the terminally interested, After The Crash is downloadable here. Just for the sake of completeness, since Nick Clegg feels the need to justify his claims with the appeal to anonymous sources that is "any economist will tell you", here is an explanation of why he is wrong, by Professor James D. Hamilton of the Economics Department at the University of California, and Professor Menzie Chinn, Professor of Public Affairs and Economics at the University of Wisconsin, based on work by Dr Mark Zandi, Chief Economist at Moody's Analytics - and a former McCain adviser. So well done Nick Clegg, you're now to the economic right of the US Republican mainstream. Here is the same point being made by Nobel Prize winning economist Professor Paul Krugman. Of course it may be that the quotes have been misattributed, in which case I'm sure clarification will follow swiftly. |

Website: http://www.likeblood.com/ The latest music video from D.C.-bred rap group, Likeblood, "Money Over Here" featuring Bobby V, began its rotation on MTV Jams this past weekend generating a significant amount of buzz on Twitter surrounding the video's debut. It is premiering just as the group breaks into the Top 50, landing at #44 on Mediabase's urban chart last week. After debuting as the #2 most-added urban record earlier this year, Likeblood is continuing their push up the charts and is excited to release their new video to the world. "The video features a lot of cameos from people who are really doing it big in D.C.," says Yung E. "We just wanted to bring the city together on this one. We feel like D.C. is about to blow and it's time to show people that we have real movement going on here," says Dre Strong. The video was shot in Washington, D.C. at Ibiza Nightclub in late January and was directed by Erica Chamblee and Lindsey Christian, the team behind the recent film, "Jazz in the Diamond District." "We just wanted to have a good time shooting the video. It was great to have Bobby [V] in D.C. and the entire city came out to support," says Mbea Da 1. The problem has been working out that A> there were four steps and B> just exactly WHICH FOUR STEPS NEEDED TO BE DONE!! So, I have a system running in a virtual box (with disbaled networking) that is a mirror of the physical running on the live internet. A review of A Thousand Sons by Graham McNeill. Normally I'm not a fan of Graham McNeill, but A Thousand Sons has to be his greatest book yet and it's clear to see how working closely with Dan Abnett has rubbed off on the writer of Storm Of Iron and Dead Sky Black Sun.As a keen Space Wolves player, I'd preordered my copy of A Thousand Sons while I eagerly await the release of Prospero Burns by Dan Abnett, which as far as we can tell, explains the series of events leading up to and including the destruction of the Thousand Sons homeworld from the Space Wolves point of view. A Thounsand Sons tells these events from the tragic perspective of the Thousand Sons. I'm going to keep my review of A Thousand Sons as spoiler free as I can, although the events within the book are well known by most people who have read the Warhammer 40K background. SPOILERS: All spoilers have been written in orange italic text. If you don't want to see it, don't read it! I'm not a great one for reading, usually due to limited time, but since I've been rested up for two days with some sort of sinus flu, I felt it was a good time to bury my head into a good book and A Thousand Sons by Graham McNeill is an exceptional book. Ahriman's Intro Our tale begins with a quick two page intro from Ahzek Ahriman in the present, awaiting the consequences of casting his Rubric before looking to the past, neatly dropping a bombshell that the Thousand Sons are still loyal to the Emperor. Ahriman is to be our central character and what a fantastic character he is, full of compassion, heroism and conscience. The Mountain Magnus the Red, Primarch of the Thousand Sons temporarily abandons the Great Crusade with Leman Russ of the Space Wolves and Lorgar of the Word Bearers to investigate an unnatural mountain formation on a feral world. Impatient with their allies lack of interest in the war, Lord Skarssen of the Space Wolves 5th company arrives to threaten Magnus into joining with Russ and continuing the crusade. It's here that Ahriman befriends Othere Wyrdmake a powerful Space Wolves Rune Priest. They two find that they have much to learn from one another. This is an opportunity for McNeill to introduce his characters one by one. Ahriman, Magnus and Othere Wyrdmake are beautifully detailed while four Remembrancers are outlined and their characters grow throughout the novel. However, the captains of the Thousand Sons become a little muddled as their names aren't that easy to remember straight off the bat and few have defining characteristics to really set them apart. Each is a member of a different magical cult with their own unique psychic powers, but perhaps McNeill could have given each of them an elemental colour to help the reader better remember who is who. Instead I remembered them as an ensamble of Thousand Sons captains and little else. As Magnus' investistagion of the mountain continues, an unexpected foe draws the Thousand Sons and Space Wolves together and after the battle Magnus explains to his captains that "There are no wolves on Fenris". SPACE WOLVES SPOILER Magnus explains that the early Fenris colonists were biochemists who used the Canis Helix to harden their people, making them more genetically able to adapt to the ever changing environment with their wolf-like traits. Essentially Magnus is saying that Fenrisian wolves evolved from genetically altered humans over thousands of years. This is later reinforced in the burning of Prospero. Flesh-Change Battling against giant shrike riding humans alongside the Space Wolves and Word Bearers, the Thousand Sons come to blows with the Space Wolves for preserving a library of knowledge Lord Skarssen seeks to destroy. Just when a cease fire is being called, one of the Thousand Sons captains undergoes a horrific "Flesh-Change" and the genetic instability of the Thousand Sons makes itself known. Magnus reassures Ahriman that their curse of mutation had been cured by him long ago and that this incident was one in a billion. Ullanor The Thousand Sons are called to the stage of Ullanor to witness Horus Lupercal's ascension to Warmaster. This has been covered before in the first Horus Heresy novel, but this depiction has a little more clarity and adds some finer details to the gathering. Nikaea (The Trial of Magnus the Red) The Thousand Sons are lured to Nikaea under false pretences for Magnus the Red to stand trial for accusations of sorcery. The Emperor bans the further use of Librarians in any Space Marine legion and forbids the further practice of magic by the Thousand Sons. In his rage, Magnus lowers his mental barriers and Ahriman gleams a vast amount of information about his Primarch and a terrible secret. Afterwards, Magnus collapses and is overwhelmed by visions of the future. Back On Prospero We get a picture of everyday life on Prospero from the four Remembrancers who have witnessed the events throughout the story so far, painting a very human picture to the visceral horror Space Marines battling alien monsters and the emotional reaction to the god like figures of Primarchs walking amongst men. I could be highly critical with McNeill's inclusion of these characters as they serve no real purpose in the grander scheme of things. However, they seem perfectly placed to deliver an everymman's persepective of the situation while asking important questions to help reveal the history of the Thousand Sons further. Some of the Thousand Sons characters in the story (like Ahriman) are surprisingly human for Astartes and by having these physically and mentally weaker characters with a higher sense of morality we get an excellent contrast to make the Space Marines distant, militaristic and inhuman when needed. Warnings Magnus warns Horus Lupercal of the powers attempting to corrupt him, but fails to win his brother's favour. Magnus then decides to use his astral projection ceremony (at the cost of 1,000 lives) to contact the Emperor despite being forbidden to continue using his powers. The entrance to the web way and the Golden Throne device is damaged by Magnus and the psychic shockwave of his intrusion kills thousands in the Emperor's palace. GOLDEN THRONE SPOILER We learn that Magnus was intended to sit on the Golden Throne and use his power to guide hummanity through the web way. Prospero Burns After his encounter with the Emperor, Magnus is overwhelmed with guilt and prevents the Thousand Sons from knowing about or forming a proper defence against the approaching Space Wolves fleet. Magnus believes that by allowing himself to be killed, he will prove his loyalty to the Emperor. Ahriman and the Thousand Sons captains ignore their primarch prepare a series of defensive lines to slow the Space Wolves advance while civilian ships can escape the capital city. The rest of Prospero is reduced to ash in a devastating orbital bombardment. The Wolf King, Leman Russ, leads the Space Wolves in a savage slaughter through the city, killing thousands while taking heavy casualties from the magicks of the Thousand Sons. It looks as though the city will hold until one by one the Thousand Sons lose control of their arcane powers and the Flesh-Change claims them one by one. Ahriman orders a retreat to the central pyramid where Magnus finally joins the battle and delays The Wolf King so that Ahriman and the remaining Thousand Sons can escape through a golden portal. Magnus bestows Ahriman with The Book of Magnus and heightened powers before Leman Russ lifts the Thousand Sons Primarch above his head and brings him down over one knee, breaking his back. The Planet of Sorcerers Ahriman awakes to find himself in a strange landscape. More of the Thousand Sons have mutated with the Flesh-Change. He and his captains put them down one by one and Magnus reappears in a bright new form. The novel concludes with Ahriman preparing to cast his Rubric, endeavouring to restore the Thousand Sons to glory in the eyes of the Emperor while Magnus sits alone in his tower, looking for a sign to validate his decisions to justify the choices he made. "I have found what I believe will be the beginnings of a mighty spell to undo all that has befallen us. I call it the Rubric." Book Review: A Thousand Sons 4/5A Thousand Sons is a great book for Thousand Sons and Space Wolves fans alike as well as followers of the Horus Heresy series. The Thousand Sons and Ahriman are the tragic heroes, made to suffer for the mistakes and the arrogance of their Primarch Magnus. Having read the whole book it's easy to resent Magnus for the tough decisions he has had to make. The first big decision was his undoing and that led him down this tragic path. They say that "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" and this is certainly true of Magnus. Although it doesn't help that he's been keeping lots of secrets all along. The secrets mount up, the truth eventually comes out and it's clear to see why so many are accusing the Thousand Sons legion of sorcery. As I've said before, I'm not a big fan of Graham McNeill's writing. When reading some of his earlier books, I found that he either waffles on with too many details or his conversations seem rather forced. However, A Thousand Sons reads more like a Dan Abnett novel than one of Graham McNeill's. The conversation is sharp and punchy as is much of the description. I feel that McNeill would do well to emulated Abnett's style further by continuing to employ conversation to progress the plot and use conversation to break up lengthy chunks of description. In the final chapters of the book, the battle for Prospero is one of the most gripping parts because it combines essential detail of the action with snippets of conversation and quick exchanges, which keeps the action fluid and maintains the pace of the conflict without getting bogged down in detail. So why 4/5 and not 5/5? There's a couple of times when you want McNeill to just get on with it. No one really wants to read 4 pages about Magnus flying across the astral plane when 1 would certainly suffice. Did the four Remembrancer characters survive? We don't really know. Despite being a very empathic and moral character that the reader can releate to, Ahriman seems mentally weak at times. He's bowled over my someone's psychic might on an almost daily basis it seems. He might be a favoured son of Magnus, but there's nothing to indicate how he qualified as the legion's Cheif Librarian. It's only when Prospero must be defended that he defies his Primarch and courageously leads the Thousand Sons from the front. This is when he really shines and does what he had to do. But overall, it's an excellent book, Graham McNeill's writing has certainly improved and A Thousand Sons is a joy to read -which came as a pleasant surprise when I found Storm of Iron and Dead Sky Black Sun hard going at times. Hopefully you've enjoyed my review of A Thousand Sons and will want to read it for yourself. Stay tuned for a book review of Prospero Burns when it's published! |
